The Bending Process

In a press brake forming process, the work piece (sheet metal) is placed over a die block, and a punch applies pressure to the sheet to create the desired shape. The force exerted by the press causes the metal to bend, but due to the material's natural elasticity, it tends to "spring back" slightly toward its original position once the pressure is released. To counteract this, the work piece must be over-bent to ensure the final shape achieves the correct angle.

 

The extent of the spring back depends on several factors, including:

-Material Type: Different metals have varying levels of elasticity, with some materials requiring more compensation for spring back than others.

-Thickness: Thicker materials may exhibit more spring back, demanding more force and precision during the bending process.

-Bending Method: The type of bending method used, such as air bending or bottoming, also affects how much spring back occurs.

Achieving accurate bends requires careful consideration of the material properties and the specific requirements of the design. Advanced equipment and skilled operators are essential to ensure the correct force and over-bend are applied to reach the desired shape with minimal errors. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology is often used in modern brake presses to ensure precision, repeatability, and efficiency in the bending process.
